ADRENAL INSUFFICIENCY STUDY EXPANDS TO COVID MONITORING
This pandemic is frightening for everyone, but particularly for those who have chronic medical conditions. Adrenal insufficient patients have twin risks of possibly “catching” COVID-19 more easily and the additional problem of adrenal crisis complicating their ability to respond to a major illness. The factors deciding who gets sick versus who has limited symptoms from COVID-19 remain mysterious at this point. We do know from China and Italy that having other medical problems may increase risk of severe disease.
Researchers around the country are looking for ways to collect information about the COVID disease and existing research cohorts are very important resources.
The Adrenal Insufficiency (AI) Study is participating with several other patient cohort studies to collect detailed information about who gets sick, what kind of symptoms do they experience and what are the long term outcomes. We have developed surveys to use in tracking the disease and are now getting those new surveys approved for use.
Later this week, the AI study hopes to begin sending emails out to subjects enrolled in the study to invite them to participate. Participation is again totally voluntary. The surveys will ask about recent COVID-like illnesses, testing for COVID and detailed symptoms. A survey will be sent monthly to ask about current health status and/or optionally, more detailed surveys for weekly reminders to report acute illness and symptoms. Should a participant be hospitalized due to COVID-19, the study will ask for records from the hospitalization.
The goal of this is to establish whether AI patients have greater risk with this disease and what might be done to reduce risk. It is likely that COVID illness will remain a problem for at least the next year or more. It is important to start tracking it now.
Individuals who want to participate in the COVID tracking, but were not previously enrolled in the AI study can join by signing up (signing a consent form) for the AI Study. Emails with the COVID survey will go out to active subjects in the study. We also encourage non-AI people to enroll in the AI study and the COVID tracking project. Please invite non-AI friends to join!
